Programs

The Richmond Village Beacon is located in the Richmond District in San Francisco. RVB is based at George Washington High School and has two satellite sites at Presidio and Roosevelt Middle Schools. Services are based on youth development and occur Monday-Friday from 10am-8pm. These services include evening adult and community enrichment programs.

      

The Beacon hub is located at Washington High School and has after-school programs at Roosevelt and Presidio Middle Schools.

High School Programs

  • Youth Employment Programs

The Richmond Village Beacon employment Programs prepare and support youth to enter and stay in the workforce successfully.
RVBEP provides job readiness and post-employment support while facilitating connections between youth and George Washington faculty with community-based organizations.
Identified outcomes for youth that access RVBEP include:
1. To attain job readiness skills to prepare for successful employment
2. To receive post-employment services that will help youth with job retention
3. To access employment opportunities through job fairs and other employment events

Job Bank
Youth come to the beacon at lunch & after school and the College & Career Center on Tuesdays and Thursdays during lunch (Room 114) to find out who is hiring and what jobs are available. Get tips on how to make your application stand out.


Beacon in the Classroom
The Beacon provides life-skills workshops that take place in Washington High School classes. Teachers sign up at the Beacon for workshops on interviewing, resume writing, improving time management, knowing youth workers’ rights, and how to buy a car.


Beacon Youth@Work
Youth attend this “support” group once per month and talk about how to balance their jobs and personal lives. Some topics include financial literacy, relationships and time management. This group also includes purely fun activities to give students a space to relax.


Youth Program Assistants
Youth have the opportunity to work up to 10 hours per week at the following school-based programs:

  • Presidio & Roosevelt After School Program
  • The Richmond District After School Collaborative (Elementary School)
  • Richmond Village Beacon through the Mayor’s Youth Employment and Education Program

Youthcares
Youthcares is an intergenerational Program that trains and hires youth to work with senior citizens. Youth co-instruct an ESL or art class and work weekly at a food bank.

Youth Multicultural Programs

Composed of identity-based programs that provide a supportive and collaborative environment where members learn their culture and identity through peer education and community exposure. in addition, the goals of the programs are to provide for a learning environment for student growth & empowerment and to recognize diversity within their community.


Youth Leadership Forum
To build multicultural awareness, develop leadership skills and encourage a collective effort for social change. To empower student leaders to recognize, challenge and take proactive approaches to diversity in school and in the San Francisco community.


Black Student Union
An identity-based organization with the purpose of fostering a sense of community among all students of the African Diaspora at Washington High School and the Beacon. Our mission is to stimulate the intellectual, political, cultural and social growth of all members.


Latinos Unidos
Bienvendios! A space for youth to learn about and celebrate Latino culture. Fun field trips, workshops and more. To provide programming that can highlight the following needs observed in the Latino community.


Kaibigang Pilipino
To create a sense of community where members learn the Pilipino culture, tradition, language, political and historical issues. Also, be able to provide a space of learning and growth through community outreach, educational and college field trips, informative meetings, fundraising and performances.


Lion Dance
To educate the community on the art of Lion Dance through performances and interaction. Hence, be able to create understanding and appreciation of the unique elements of Asian culture and tradition within their members and the public.


Spanish Speaking Cultural Club
The program is composed of students who are enrolled in Spanish class and interested in learning the culture and language of Spanish-speaking countries.

Teen Center
Want a cool place to chill after school? Come play sports, games, foosball, pool, Xbox, Ping Pong, watch movies and hang out with your friends or meet new ones! Come check it out!

Teen Center Lite
Come and get homework help from certified teachers in any subject after 3:30 -5.  Want a cool and friendly place to get your homework done? Need a little help with your homework? Prepare for exams with a study group, and use a computer to complete the assignments. A peaceful and quiet place for youth to come after 6th period to study, get homework help or play board games.

A youth development program that provides a safe, fun and supportive environment in the Richmond District for all youth to explore and reach their full potential. We have two areas of focus: youth leadership and visual & performing arts.

Beacon Teen Advisory Board
A group of youth who make decisions an guide the design of the Beacon. Help us keep the Beacon a cool, innovative space for youth!


Case Management
Are you a student in need of on-on-one support? Case Management allows you the opportunity to receive support form an adult ally in everything school, personal, family, etc.. Services are confidential.


Couples & Friendz
A club for you and your friends to talk about teen relationships, love and safer sex in a fun and safe place with adult allies.


Gay Straight Alliance & GO YAC
Queer? Questioning? Straight? Ally? An activist for the rights of all people? Come to GSA (Gay Straight Alliance) meetings, or help plan awareness-raising activities with GO YAC (Go Youth Advisory Committee).


Urban Girlz/Guyz Read
It’s not your typical book club. Join us as we talk about issues affecting young people in your favorite urban books.

A safe, supportive environment for girls to be girls


YoIC
A program for Youth with Incarcerated Caregivers
If you have someone in your life that is or has been incarcerated we are here for you. We are a youth group focused on leadership and empowerment through service learning.

Visual & Performing Arts

Spoken Word
Express your creative writing or poetic talent and learn the art of performing your pieces!


DJ Class
Learn to spin and learn various forms of scratching and mixing records as well as how to set up the equipment.


Music/Guitar
Beat production, song writing and open jams! Bring your instruments or use our guitars and gear.

Video Production
Direct, shoot, edit, craft and show your own films! Enter film fesitvals and learn Digital Story Telling with HIFY!

Adult Enrichment Programs

English as a Second Language
This helps improve English comprehension in a multi-level class. This course will provide assistance in hearing correctly and speaking clearly to facilitate better communication in conversations, business transactions and daily activities.

Computer Class
Whether you have never used a computer or just need to polish up on your skills, we have a computer class for you.
Beginner’s Class: Tuesday & Thursday 6:30-8:30pm

Dance Class
Whether you are a beginner or seasoned pro you will find enjoyment in our dance class.  We strive to build a sense of community through the shared love of dance. Dances include: Wiennese Waltz, Samba, American Rumba, Tango, Cha-Cha, 2 step, Foxtrot, Meringue and more…
Beginner’s Class: Thursday 7:00-8:30pm
Intermediate & Advanced Class: Monday 7:00-8:30pm


Tai Chi
Tai Chi Chuan is a Chinese form of exercise derived from Taoism. The practice of Tai Chi is beneficial to health and it is also a subtle, sophisticated and scientific method of self defense.

Intermediate class: Wednesday 7:00-8:00pm

Yoga
Yoga unifies the mind, body and spirit. Yoga creates balance in the body through developing both strength and flexibility. Our yoga classes take place on Tuesdays. Come try our earlier & lighter yoga class, the faster-paced class later, or stay for both.

Art
Our intergenerational art class is a true work of art. Learn to draw, paint and appreciate art. RVB has partnered with Center for Elders and Youth in the Arts to bring you this class.

Neighborhood & Family Services

Neighborhood & Family Services strives to fulfill RVB’s goal of providing a continuum of services from childhood to adulthood and build a sense of community.
We offer adult enrichment classes and Family Services to anyone in San Francisco. We have also built collaborations with George Washington High School, the PTSA and Presidio & Roosevelt Middle Schools to establish a Parent Advisory Council as well as cultural family nights. All services and classes are free of charge.

Parent Advisory Board
The board is a safe place for parents to voice any and all of their concerns regrding families and youth in San Francisco. This is a chance for your voice to be heard and to provide feedback on a number of different levels; to the Beacon, to the city and the nation. Informational meetingswill be held throughout the year. The Parent Advisory Board meets once a month.


Family Programming
RVB is proud to offer culturall and language sensitive family programming. We have family nights for our programs, such as Latino Family Night and BSU’s Soul Food Diinner. RVB also collaborates with PTSA to provide family programming. In addition, RVB holds parent seminars and workshops based on the expressed needs of the community.

Middle School Programs
What We Offer
Students have the opportunity to change classes every nine weeks based on the school nine-week quarter calendar. Every Friday, students have free choice to participate in group games, movies, sports, and field trips instead of Enrichment & Academic Class Time. Some Fridays include educational activities.


Start Date
Program begins the second week of school – the Tuesday after the Labor Day Holiday. Registration is the first week of school.
It is FREE! There is no cost for the after school program.
6th grade incoming students may receive REGISTRATION FORMS during 6th grade orientation; families will receive information about 6th grade orientation in the mail.
Registration Forms will be collected and handed-out during the first week of school, during lunchtime at a table set-up in the courtyard (don’t worry you’ll see it) and after school in the cafeteria.
 
Enrichment & Academic Class Time
Students choose one class to participate in each day Monday through Thursday. Some choices may include: Homework Assistance, Hip Hop Dance, Breakdancing, Cartooning, Chess, Arts & Crafts, Leadership, or Video Production, etc. Classes are adapted every 9 weeks based on students’ interest and staff experience.

Program Hours: 3:18 – 6:00 Office Hours: 10:00am – 6:30pm Program Schedule (subject to change): 3:18 – School is dismissed 3:18 – 3:45 – Community Time (Free Snack and Free Time) 3:18 – 3:35 – Beacon students report to cafeteria for Snack and Free Time 3:35 – 3:45 – Beacon students are dismissed to finish snack, put games away, and go to their after school program classes 3:45 – 5:00 – Enrichment and Academic Class Time 5:00 – 6:00 – Free Choice (games in the cafeteria, sports in upper yard or gym, and homework assistance in a classroom)
