- Chinatown Aftershock Treasure Hunt
Tuesday, April 11, 2006
Kids Hunt for Clues to the Rebirth of Chinatown After the
1906 Earthquake
Over 200 elementary and middle school students attending
schools in Chinatown and North Beach will go on a community
treasure hunt to learn how the community survived two calamities:
the 1906 earthquake itself and subsequent efforts to relocate
the Chinese population to swampland at the outskirts of
the City.
The Chinatown Aftershock Treasure Hunt will take the kids
through several social service agencies, hunting for clues
about life in Chinatown a century ago. Through this, the
students will gain a greater sense of the community’s
resilient history and learn about the wide array of services
available to their families. Then they will tour the Chinese
Historical Society of America Museum to view the new exhibit
“Since the Quake: The Rebirth of San Francisco Chinatown
1906-2006.”

Gateway to Fitness Celebration
Tuesday, November 15, 2005
Mayor Gavin Newsom joined more than a hundred Beacon youth
on Tuesday, November 15 at James Denman Middle School,
home of the OMI/Excelsior Beacon, to celebrate the successful
first session of the Gateway to Fitness program.
Mayor Gavin Newsom was the keynote speaker, highlighting
messages about the importance of fitness and health. The
Gateway to Fitness youths demonstrated a variety of games
and physical activities and even got Mayor Newsom to join
in and shoot a few baskets. Gateway participants from
Beacon Centers across the city joined in the celebration.
The Gateway to Fitness program has three key components:
a variety of fun physical activities, nutrition information,
and parent involvement. For more details on the program,
session of the Gateway to Fitness program will begin enrollment
in the spring of 2005.
The program’s success was highlighted by other speakers
that included Denman Principal Gary Pacini, OMI/Excelsior
Beacon Director Dave MacGillis, Kaiser Permanente Area
Manager Michael Alexander, San Francisco Beacon Initiative
Executive Director Virginia Witt, Dr. Chuck Wibbelsman,
and YMCA CEO Chuck Collins.
The YMCA of San Francisco generously provided free year-long
memberships to every youth (and a parent) completing the
Gateway to Fitness program, ensuring that the impact of
this program will last well beyond the fall session. The
youth who attended also received T-shirts, giftbags, and
backpacks that were generously donated by Kaiser Permanente.
Special thanks: To Dave MacGillis and his wonderful
staff at the OMI/E Beacon Center, who did an amazing job
of managing an event that included many VIPs and over
a hundred kids from across the city. And many thanks to
our partners: Kaiser Permanente, Team Up for Youth, The
California Endowment and the YMCA of San Francisco for
their support of the Gateway program.
