- Chinatown Aftershock Treasure Hunt
Tuesday, April 11, 2006
Kids Hunt for Clues to the Rebirth of Chinatown After the
1906 Earthquake
Over 200 elementary and middle school students attending
schools in Chinatown and North Beach will go on a community
treasure hunt to learn how the community survived two calamities:
the 1906 earthquake itself and subsequent efforts to relocate
the Chinese population to swampland at the outskirts of
the City.
The Chinatown Aftershock Treasure Hunt will take the kids
through several social service agencies, hunting for clues
about life in Chinatown a century ago. Through this, the
students will gain a greater sense of the community’s
resilient history and learn about the wide array of services
available to their families. Then they will tour the Chinese
Historical Society of America Museum to view the new exhibit
“Since the Quake: The Rebirth of San Francisco Chinatown
1906-2006.”
