Promising Practices
Briefs
The San Francisco Beacon Initiative has created a series of
2-page briefs to highlight promising practices at the Beacon
Centers. Current Promising Practices Briefs include:
Quality Standards for Beacon Centers
The Quality Standards for Beacon Centers support quality programming
and ensure accountability to youth, parents and caregivers,
schools, and public and private stakeholders. The standards
guide the policies and practices that help deliver positive
outcomes for youth, families and communities, and provide
a framework for ongoing evaluation.

Experience the Beacon Academy - Coming
Soon!
From August 16 - 20, 2004, the San Francisco Beacon
Initiative hosted the First Annual Beacon Academy at the Fort
Mason Center in San Francisco. A weeklong series of peer-led
training, professional development and networking, the Academy
brought together 100 Beacon staff from across all 8 Beacon
Centers. Youth from Sunset Neighborhood Beacon Center’s
Video Club documented the workshops and presentations. The
footage is currently being edited, and a short film about
the Academy will be available to download from this site in
June.
Project-based Learning
Tool - Coming Soon!
Project-based learning activities are a fun and interactive
way to build an interdisciplinary array of skills. Sunset
Neighborhood Beacon Center has created a tool that maps project-based
learning activities to academic content standards adopted
by the California State Board of Education.
