Beacons Springing into Action During SFUSD Teachers Strike

By Sally Jenkins-Stevens, SF Beacon Initiative Executive Director

During the recent SFUSD teachers strike in February, families across San Francisco faced sudden and significant disruptions to their daily routines. With schools closed, many parents were left without reliable daytime supervision for their children, creating both logistical and economic challenges. In response, the 27 San Francisco Beacons mobilized quickly and comprehensively, transforming their school-based programs to off-site hubs for their highest need youth.

Beacon Directors and staff sprang into action, working throughout the weekend to assess needs, secure alternative program spaces, coordinate staffing, and communicate directly with families. This rapid, coordinated response ensured that families had timely information and dependable options during a period of uncertainty.

Programming was adapted creatively to meet the moment. Marina Middle School Beacon operated out of the Presidio YMCA basketball gym, while Jamestown Community Center—which hosts Beacons at Chavez Elementary, Buena Vista Horace Mann K-8, and James Lick Middle School—shifted programming to its partner site, 826 Valencia. Francisco Middle School Beacon held the majority of its programming at Joe DiMaggio Playground. Despite these new and improvised locations, staff maintained a strong focus on providing structured, engaging, and supportive environments for young people.

Across the city, hundreds of young people were served each day through these coordinated efforts. Just as importantly, Beacon Centers provided working families with peace of mind, knowing their children were in trusted, caring environments while they navigated work and other responsibilities. Notably, Beacons carried out this work without certainty around reimbursement for thousands of dollars of expenses during the strike period, underscoring their deep commitment to serving families and meeting community needs.

This response underscores the essential role of Beacon Centers as adaptable and deeply rooted community institutions. Their ability to pivot quickly, leverage partnerships, and meet emergent needs highlights the ongoing value of sustained investment in the Beacon model. In moments of crisis and beyond, Beacons remain a critical resource for San Francisco’s youth and families.
